La Camargue
Established as a national park & nature reserve in 1972, the Parc Régional de Camargue covers approximately 800km², being some of the wildest and most protected territory in Europe. It is a major world heritage wetland. Much of its area is under water - inland salt water lakes (étangs). Approximately a third of the Camargue is either lakes or marshland.
Its is no wonder that such an unlikely place in Southern France has always been a source of inspiration for many artists and craftsmen. This is also the only place in Europe where flamingos nest.
Harvesting salt has been an occupation of many of the Camargue region citizens for centuries.
